The initial session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin building a picture of what has brought you to therapy. Before we meet, you'll be asked to complete a short pre-session questionnaire — this helps us make the most of our time together and gives you a chance to begin reflecting on your goals ahead of the session. There is no expectation to have everything figured out. Many people find that simply being heard is a meaningful place to start.
Therapy offers something different from conversations with family or friends — it is a dedicated, confidential space where your experience is held without judgement, agenda, or the need for reciprocity. A psychologist brings clinical training and a structured understanding of how thoughts, emotions, and behaviours are connected, which allows us to explore patterns more deeply and work toward meaningful, lasting change. Rather than offering advice or reassurance, therapy invites you to develop your own insight and capacity — so that the growth you experience in sessions can travel with you into everyday life.
This varies greatly from person to person and depends on what you are working through, your goals, and how therapy unfolds for you. Some people find that a focused course of six to ten sessions provides what they need. Others engage in longer-term work to explore deeper patterns or sustain ongoing growth. We will regularly review how things are going together, so you always have a clear sense of where you are and what feels right for you going forward.
Telehealth sessions are conducted via a secure, confidential video platform. Once your appointment is confirmed, you will receive a link to join your session — no downloads or technical knowledge required. All you need is a stable internet connection and a private, comfortable space where you won't be interrupted. Many clients find telehealth just as effective as in-person therapy, with the added benefit of being accessible from anywhere in Australia, eliminating travel time, and offering greater flexibility around work and life commitments.
Find a private, comfortable space where you feel at ease and are unlikely to be interrupted. Before your first session, you will receive pre-session questionnaires — taking time to reflect as you complete these can be a gentle and useful starting point, helping to clarify your goals and begin the process of turning inward. Beyond that, there is nothing specific you need to prepare. Come as you are. Therapy works best when you feel free to be honest, even when that feels uncertain or uncomfortable.
To access a Medicare rebate, you will need a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) and referral from your GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician. Once you have these, you are eligible for a rebate of $98.95 per session on up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year. The rebate is applied after your session fee is paid in full. You do not need a referral to access therapy — you are welcome to attend without one, though the Medicare rebate will not apply in that case. If you are unsure whether a MHCP is right for you, we recommend speaking with your GP.
To ensure you receive the most appropriate support, I do not offer services in the following areas:
- Legal or court-related work (including reports, WorkCover, compensation matters, or involvement in legal proceedings)
- Couples or family therapy, or seeing more than one person from the same family or close friendship group
- Services for Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) clients at this time, due to potential conflicts of interest
